Hailing from the South American mountain ranges, rebutia, a compact, globular cactus, thrives in strong light, moderate water, and well-draining soil mixed with organic matter. It prefers a temperature range of 60-80°F but can tolerate light frost. Care must be taken against root rot, which may occur due to over-watering, and pests commonly seen are mealybugs and scale. Seasonal care includes increased watering during the active growth phase (spring, summer), while winter warrants a drier resting period. Rebutia may also temporarily shrink or wrinkle during the colder months as an evolutionary adaption to dehydration.
