Crafting the Perfect Mix: Practical Guidelines
There's no one-size-fits-all solution to creating an optimal bonsai soil mix as needs vary across different species. However, some basic rules apply. The mix should be coarse, open, and fast-draining yet capable of holding enough water to support the tree between watering. Generally, a healthy mix consists of organic and inorganic components with a ratio that depends on the tree species, climate, and local conditions. Typical components include akadama (clay granules), pumice, lava rock, fine gravel, sphagnum moss, and pine bark. Through trial and error, every bonsai practitioner can create an optimal mix for their plants.
