Under the Judge’s Lens: Bonsai Evaluation
A bonsai competition is an intricate interplay of technical mastery and creative expression; hence, judging criteria reflect these aspects. The judges, typically expert bonsai artists themselves, evaluate age evidence, tree’s health, branch structure, roots, and the overall aesthetics. Further, they consider the chosen pot, its harmony with the tree, the quality of the surface soil, and if a moss has been rightly applied. The intangible aura, or the feeling that a bonsai exudes, also plays a deciding role in the final evaluation.
