Bonsai: A Prelude to its Origins
The art of bonsai, deriving its name from the Japanese words 'bon,' meaning 'tray' and 'sai,' referring to 'planting,' is believed to have begun in China around 700 CE. Ancient Chinese horticulturists, inspired by isolated and weather-worn trees in their surroundings, started cultivating portable-sized replicas within containers—an art form then known as 'penjing.' This technique was primarily used by Buddhist monks to bring the outdoors inside their temples. Over time, penjing found its way into Japan, marking the genesis of what is now known as bonsai.
