Asphodelus albus
White asphodel
White asphodel (Asphodelus albus) is a perennial flower that is native to the Mediterranean, where it commonly grows in meadows in sunny, fertile, well-drained soils. In Ancient Greece, asphodel was associated with mourning and death; ordinary souls were thought to spend the afterlife in meadows of asphodel.
Asphodelus fistulosus
Onionweed
Onionweed (Asphodelus fistulosus) is an annual plant that is considered an invasive weed in the United States. It will grow to about 69 cm tall. Blooms in summer with white to pale pink flowers that close each night. Fruit ripens in fall and produces six seeds per fruit. Multiplies by tuber roots.
Asphodelus aestivus
Summer asphodel
Summer asphodel (Asphodelus aestivus) produces showy white flowers that bloom from red-striped buds on long, leafless stems. It is especially popular as a wildflower because grazing animals leave it along, making it plentiful across dry Mediterranean climates. The plant's tuber can be used to create yellow dye and an adhesive sometimes used in book binding and shoemaking.
Asphodelus ramosus
Branched asphodel
White star-shaped flowers burst forth in early spring from branched asphodel. This plant is known to thrive in the hottest, driest environments. Ancient Greek legend held that this flower was the favorite food of the dead, and that it blanketed the plains of the mythological underworld, Hades.
Asphodelus cerasiferus
Small-fruited asphodel
Small-fruited asphodel's unique appearance of tall stems adorned with white flowers is a sight to behold. It takes several years for the plant to mature, but it is worth the wait. It can also be grown as a garden plant.
