Catalpa ovata
Chinese catalpa
Chinese catalpa is a flowering, pod-bearing tree native to China, but cultivated as an ornamental tree in Europe and North America as well. When bruised, the tree releases a pleasant scent. Due to the appearance of the three-lobed leaves, chinese catalpa is sometimes confused with Paulownia tomentosa.
Catalpa bignonioides
Cigartree
The cigartree is the sole primary food source for the sphinx moth caterpillar, which is regarded as prized fish bait. This tree with cigar-like pods is native to the southeastern United States and is planted as a shade or decorative tree due to its numerous colorful flowers and coarse leaves. When crushed, its leaves emit an unpleasant odor.
Catalpa × erubescens 'Purpurea'
Catalpa 'Purpurea'
A medium-sized variety of Catalpa, the catalpa 'Purpurea' may grow to a height of 12 meters over the course of twenty to fifty years. It is also distinguished by the black-purple coloration of its early leaves and the coloration of its flowers. The flowers are white with orange and purple markings and grow to about 3 centimeters wide.
Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea'
Cigartree 'Aurea'
Also known as cigartree 'Aurea', this tree is a popular ornamental plant in gardens due to its showy white flowers and unique cigar-shaped pods. The wood of this tree is used for furniture, while the leaves and pods have been used in traditional medicine. Be cautious, the tree can be toxic to livestock if ingested in large quantities.
Catalpa speciosa
Northern catalpa
Northern catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) is a tree native to the midwestern region of the United States. The latter portion of the Latin name Catalpa speciosa means "showy," for the tree's appearance. Northern catalpa is planted as an ornamental tree and grows best in acidic soil and full sunlight.
