How to Propagate Waterweeds?
The primary propagation method for waterweeds is vegetative, through cuttings. Key factors for a successful propagation include ample light, warm water temperatures, and nutrient-rich aquatic substrate. This species requires minimal special consideration beyond avoidance of overly shaded conditions. Generally, propagation is easy and has a high success rate. To propagate waterweeds, 1) Choose a healthy stem with several leaf nodes, 2) Cut a 4-6 inch segment from the parent plant just below a leaf node, 3) Remove the leaves from the bottom inch of the cutting, and 4) Plant the cutting in the substrate or allow it to float, ensuring at least one node is submerged, as roots will grow from the nodes. The plant is fast-growing, requiring regular pruning to prevent excessive cover that can affect aquatic ecosystems.
