Before you make any cuts on your field
Field pumpkin, you should identify which parts of the plant you wish to remove. Start by identifying the main vines, then note any secondary veins that grow from the main vine. If those secondary vines have additional tertiary vines growing out of them, it is a good idea to remove the tertiary vines. Once you have removed any tertiary vines, you should take stock of how many fruits each of the remaining vines holds. The main vines should hold no more than four or five fruits, while the secondary vines should hold no more than two fruits if you hope for the best quality harvest. Use your pruning tools to remove all but two fruits from each vine by cutting the excess fruit stems as close to their parent vine as possible.
Field pumpkin only have one vine. It also helps to remove all flowers and fruits that grow below the tenth leaf of the main vine, as measured from the center of the plant. Any male flowers or undersized fruits will take up vital nutrients that would be better allocated towards developing a few large pumpkins on your plant.
