As your field Field pumpkin matures, you’ll notice that it develops a set of large leaves. The way you treat these leaves during pruning requires you to be somewhat cautious. On the one hand, it is well known that more leaves on the Field pumpkin often lead to better-tasting fruits. On the other hand, if your plant has so many leaves that they trap excess moisture, the result can be moisture-related diseases that may kill your Field pumpkin or inhibit its ability to produce. So, as you prune, aim to keep as many leaves as you can while also monitoring those leaves for disease development. Another important disease factor is rainfall. Generally, it is best not to prune your plant before or just after rain. The moisture left by the rainfall allows for an easier transfer of disease to your plant. Each time you prune, you should also ensure that you use a set of sharp shears that are sterile as well, as this also lessens the odds of infection.
