River red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a flowering tree that is iconic and widespread in Australia. River red gum is native and endemic to Australia. This species provides shade from the intense heat in Australia, and is planted alongside bodies of water throughout the continent. River red gum is named for its red-colored wood, which is rot-resistant and popularly used as firewood.
Garden Use
Though some varieties of river red gum can grow as high as 18 m or more, others can be planted as shrubs or small trees in containers, and are generally easy to care for. River red gum is recognized for the distinctive and aromatic oil produced by its leaves, bark, and roots. The oil is used in aromatherapy and as a treatment for various medical conditions. The leathery leaves, on the other hand, are used in medicinal teas and as air fresheners.
