Is Devil's Darning Needles toxic to human?
The devil's darning needles is moderately toxic to humans. Its leaves contain compounds that may be both topical and gastrointestinal irritants to people. Physical contact with damaged or torn leaves may lead to redness or burning of the skin. Ingesting this plant's leaves can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms, including mouth pain, ulcers, dizziness, and confusion. In extreme cases, convulsions or even death are possible. Devil's darning needles are common ornamental plants – gardeners are advised to wear gloves while working with them. Thankfully, devil's darning needles do not have any edible look-alike, so cases of human ingestion and poisoning is extremely rare.
Is Devil's Darning Needles toxic to dog?
Clematis virginiana species are mildly to moderately toxic to dogs. All parts of most devil's darning needles plants contain a strong irritant that, if eaten, causes excessive salivation and loss of appetite. This may progress to vomiting or diarrhea. More severe symptoms are possible but very rare, as these plants tend to be extremely distasteful to dogs, and so it's not often eaten in large quantities. Seek veterinary attention if your dog is experiencing the stronger symptoms.
Is Devil's Darning Needles toxic to cat?
All parts of devil's darning needles contain an irritant glycoside which makes the plant mildly poisonous to cats. The first symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive drooling. Due to its unpleasant taste, cats won't usually eat devil's darning needles in large quantities, but it's best to contact a veterinarian to be sure.
