Weeds
Large-head sedge is a herbaceous plant useful for sand dune stabilization. Although it is not a major threat to most ecosystems, large-head sedge is classified as an invasive species in northeastern US.
How to Control it
There are several methods of control that have been used to successfully manage large-head sedge. Small-scale infestations can be handled manually. Uproot the plants and dig out remaining parts of roots from the soil to prevent regeneration from rhizomes. If the plants are established in an area for some time, repeated removal will probably be necessary. In case of large-scale infestation herbicides are usually used, however, their application is limited. For example, you might need a special permission to remove large-head sedge from sand dunes. If you opt for herbicide use, consult an agricultural expert to find the best active substance and application method for your geographic area. Spray on a windless day to avoid drift.
