Description

Clausena is a genus of flowering plants in the citrus family, Rutaceae. The genus includes shrubs and trees. The leaves of these plants are pinnate, divided into leaflets. The inflorescence varies in form, but is generally a cluster of several flowers with 4 or 5 petals and sepals. The fruit is a berry which lacks the pulp of many other fruits in the citrus family. The genus can be distinguished from related plants by the presence of a gynophore, a structure supporting the ovary in the flower. There are between about 15 and 30 species. It is distributed in Africa, southern Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.

Species of Clausena

Pink lime-berry
Pink lime-berry is an evergreen shrub or small tree often grown ornamentally for its attractive, glossy leaves and pink berries. This plant also has culinary uses in Southeast Asia where its leaves add a curry-like flavor to dishes. The berries have an aniseed flavor and are also used for cooking. This plant grows well on disturbed ground and is a good pioneer species for reclaiming land.

Wampi
Wampi is a scented evergreen tree that is cultivated for its grape-sized fragrant yellow fruit. Though native to Southeast Asia, wampi is now cultivated in many countries worldwide, including Australia, India, and even parts of the United States. The name wampi comes from the Chinese huang pi, which means “yellow-skinned fruit.”
