Description

Cudrania are shrubs, woody vines, or small trees that have a wide distribution - they naturally grow in five continents except for Europe. These flowering plants have spines on their stems, particularly when they're still young. Their leaves are usually large.

The storehousebush (Cudrania tricuspidata) is a deciduous tree that originates from East Asia, where it provides a food source for silkworms. Its fruits are similar to mulberries. A yellow dye can be extracted from its wood, and bark fibers can be used to make paper.

Cockspur thorn

Cockspur thorn (Cudrania cochinchinensis) is a small climbing tree that provides food for a variety of wildlife including the Asian elephant, the grey-headed flying fox, and the black flying fox. The tree's heartwood is processed to make yellow, red, and green dyes. These dyes are used to produce colorful clothes in traditional soga-batik patterns.
