Description

Delonix are flowering plants native to East Africa and Madagascar. Most of the species have umbrella-shaped crowns and although some have slender trunks, both D. decaryi and D. floribunda are known to have bottle-shaped trunks. Most delonix produce large-petalled flowers and make beautiful ornamental trees, particularly D. regia which has been widely introduced in tropical counties. The scientific name Delonix is inspired by the Greek word delos, which means 'evident,' and onyx, which means claw, and refer to the shape of the flower petals.
