Description

Dombeya are a genus named for the French botanist Joseph Dombey. The blooms of the members of this genus bear a resemblance to those of hydrangeas or pear trees. These evergreen shrubs attract wildlife by providing shelter and sustenance. Some species of dombeyas are grown as ornamentals or background plantings in tropical gardens.

Species of Dombeyas

Pink wild pear
Dombeya burgessiae is a noteworthy garden shrub or small tree. Native to southern Africa, this handsome shrub produces showy, white to pale pink flowers. Its appeal comes from its foliage as well, with its grape-like, velvety leaves. The flowers remain on the tree even after the flowering season has passed, and they make excellent cut flowers.

Pinkball
Pinkball (Dombeya wallichii) is a fast-growing tropical shrub native to Madagascar. This fascinating tiny tree can be grown in containers but flourishes when cultivated on the ground. Its genus name Dombeya, is to honor and pay tribute to Joseph Dombey, a French botanist and medical practitioner.
