Often found at the base of oak trees, this clustered fungus grows in distinctive rosettes. It attacks the roots of living hardwood trees. Hen-of-the-woods is considered edible when harvested young, and is cultivated in Japan on top of compressed sawdust.

Fan clubmoss (Diphasiastrum digitatum) is an evergreen plant species often planted for ground cover. Fan clubmoss is a member of the fern family and reproduces through spores. This plant grows best in partial shade and tolerates drought.

The carolina lily is native to the southeastern United States and scientifically known as the Lilium michauxii. It blooms in summer and sometimes into fall. The plant is North Carolina's official state wildflower.

The yellow morel (Morchella esculenta) is one of the most iconic and sought-after species of edible mushrooms. It is often one of the first species that novice mushroom gatherers will hunt for. Yellow morels have elongated caps that are "honeycombed", being filled with roughly polygonal holes. Splitting them down the middle reveals them to be hollow on the inside, a key feature that distinguishes them from toxic false morels. Experts recommend cooking or boiling this mushroom before consumption, as raw morels may cause an upset stomach.

Wyoming Indian-Paintbrush (Castilleja linariifolia) is a perennial wildflower that will grow to 91 cm tall. It blooms from summer to fall with scarlet red to reddish-orange flowers and yellow spikes that extend past the blooms. Flowers attract butterflies moths and caterpillars. Wyoming Indian-Paintbrush is the state flower of Wyoming in the U.S.

There are no underground stems, and the stems are almost upright on the roots and the ground. The root of the stem is slightly slanted and sprouts, so it becomes a stock. The stem also branches 2-3 degrees at the top. The height is 7 to 20 cm, sometimes around 30 cm. Stems and leaves are hard. The leaves are roughly thin and oval with a slight serration on the edge, but are often mutated and are characterized by distinguishing varieties. There is only one main vein, and it protrudes slightly behind. The leaves spiral around the stem, dark green to yellow-green, thin, hard and shiny. Although the spore comes to the upper side of the base of the spore leaf, it appears to stick to the stem as an impression. They usually arrive in the middle of the upper part of the stem, but apparently there is not much difference in the spore leaves, and it does not look like a spike. Leaves near the tip of the stem may be thick, where asexual buds form.
