Description

Native to North America, the genus of hydrastis has one species – Hydrastis canadensis. It has traditionally been used as a dye, and as it is reportedly toxic for both humans and insects, it has also been used as a bug repellant. The IUCN classified hydrastis as vulnerable on its Red List of Threatened Species.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is distinguished by its thick, yellow, knotted rootstock. Goldenseal grows wild in the woodlands of southeastern Canada and the eastern United States, although it is becoming rare. Its red berries look attractive but are inedible. The roots can be used to make insecticide as well as a yellow dye. All parts of this plant are poisonous in large doses.
