Description

Mayaca is a genus of flowering plants, often placed in its own family, the Mayacaceae. The group is widely distributed in Latin America from Mexico to Argentina, as well as in the West Indies, the southeastern United States, and central Africa. Eighteen or so species names have been proposed, but only 5 are accepted as distinct.

An aquatic herb with pretty, delicate foliage, stream bogmoss is a worldwide popular plant for tanks and aquariums. In order to thrive, it needs clean water that is rich in nutrients, particularly iron. Be careful though, as stream bogmoss tends to show an invasive potential outside its native range.
