They are great to grow in containers and flower more readily than many other cacti. These plants are easily identified by their vertical leaf ribs that look like fins.

Species of Stenocactus

Brain cactus
Brain cactus (Stenocactus multicostatus) is a flowering cactus native to Mexico where it grows in dry meadows and rocky soil. In cultivation, the brain cactus should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. This species is considered easy to care for and has the same growth considerations as most other succulents.

Stenocactus crispatus
Stenocactus crispatus is a highly decorative Mexican native cactus that makes for a striking pot plant with its sharp spines, waved ribs, and bright pink and white flowers. This plant was named by A. Berger in 1929. Stenocactus crispatus is a highly variable species with individuals that are so different in appearance that they were originally thought to be different species.
