how to grow and care
The orostachys genus is composed of hardy plants that require modest care. Basic care includes ample sunlight, infrequent watering, and well-draining soil. They flourish in colder temperatures but may struggle in areas of high heat and humidity. Common challenges include the risk of overwatering leading to rot, and pests such as aphids. Seasonally, they thrive during spring and summer, require limited watering during autumn, and can withstand extreme cold in winter, though protection from excess moisture is advised.

7 most common species:
Orostachys fimbriata
Dunce's caps
Dunce's caps tends to develop lateral buds from the base. It is suitable for planting in open fields, and its leaves can become full and compact when both light and rainwater are abundant. The leaves will turn red when the temperature varies widely. When the temperature is below 10 ℃, dunce's caps goes into dormancy, during which its leaves close together and make the plant look round like a ball.
Orostachys boehmeri
Chinese dunce cap
The chinese dunce cap is a small succulent plant with leaves that are neatly arranged in a beautiful rosette shape. The leaves have thinly-powdered surfaces and rounded margins. Stolons often grow from the bottom axils, with small buds at the tips of the stolons. These little buds also have the ability to develop into independent individuals, so the chinese dunce cap can easily crowd out of a pot. Once a pot is fully covered, those little buds will climb out of the pot, hang pendulously, and sway in the wind, which looks very pretty.
Orostachys iwarenge
Chinese dunce cap
Chinese dunce cap is a tiny lavender perennial that only blooms once in its lifespan. With tiny yellow to creamy-white flowers, this native East Asian plant has purplish-gray clustered rosettes. This succulent thrives and flourishes pleasantly in full sun, proper drainage, and cool temperatures at night. It is perfect for use as ground cover.
Orostachys japonica
Rock pine
Orostachys japonica (Japanese:爪蓮華、昭和、秀女)also known as rock pine is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae. Native to East Asia. Its main habitat is on the surface of mountain rocks in Korea, Japan and China.
Orostachys 'Fuji'
Chinese dunce cap
Chinese dunce cap (Orostachys 'Fuji') is a hybrid succulent, bred to have variegated leaves, compared to its parent plant (Orostachys iwarenge) that features solid, pale green-blue leaves. This cultivar is used for groundcovers, rock/alpine gardens, xeriscapes, and borders.
Orostachys 'Howow'
Not found
Not found is a rare succulent that makes a great ornamental addition to gardens due to its cold hardiness. They are often used in xeriscape gardens. The flowers attract bees and wasps, which pollinate this plant.
Orostachys spinosa
Orostachys spinosa
Orostachys spinosa is characterized by its compact, rosette-forming succulent leaves that converge into a spiked appearance, reflecting its survival strategy in rocky, arid environments. As a hardy perennial, it is equipped to endure harsh conditions by storing water and minimizing evaporation. Its dull green to grayish coloration also serves as a camouflage among the stones. In late summer, orostachys spinosa produces small, star-shaped flowers poised on an erect stem, contributing to its distinctive allure.
